Blue Civic Plaques in Castleford
The Civic Society are in the process of refreshing some of the town’s existing plaques and also introducing new ones. We’ve recently replaced a plaque on Chantry Vets, Church Street (previously Mexborough Arms) which denotes the site of a Roman Fortification at the time of the 1st and 2nd centuries.
A first for us, is the introduction of a QR coded video, which provides information on what this particular site would have potentially looked like at the time when the Romans occupied Castleford.
One of the two blue plaques on the old bridge in Castleford has been replaced (the former one was quite faded) and we plan to replace the other and include a QR coded video explaining some of the history around this strategic crossing point on the River Aire.
Ultimately, we hope to develop a Civic Plaque Trail but at present we are continuing to refresh existing plaques and introduce new ones.
